Joan F. O'Shea, M.D.
Dr. Joan O'Shea is dually-trained in neurosurgery and orthopaedic spine surgery. She is a board-certified neurosurgeon with additional fellowship training in orthopaedic spine surgery. She has concentrated her training and dedicated her career to the treatment of spinal disorders.
Dr. O'Shea was born and raised in New York City. She received her medical degree at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Health Center in Syracuse, New York. While completing her neurosurgical training and residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, New York, she became involved in groundbreaking surgical treatments for the care of patients suffering from spinal cancers and complex spinal disorders. After publishing several papers in this area and finishing neurosurgical training, she wished to further study spine surgery - this time from the orthopaedic view point. She was accepted into and completed an additional orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship under the direction of Gloria Estefan's spine surgeon, Dr. Michael Neuwirth, at the Hospital for Joint Disease and the Spine Institute of Beth Israel Medical Center, both located in New York City.
Dr. O'Shea has been practicing neurosurgery in Southern New Jersey for several years. Prior to creating the Spine Institute of Southern New Jersey, she practiced neurosurgery on the staff at Cooper Medical Center in Camden and in the Virtua Health System.
Dr. Joan O'Shea has been honored with the Top Doc award by Philadelphia Magazine in 2002 for Neurosurgery, specialization: spine surgery. Dr O'Shea was also recognized in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 in SJ Magazine as a Top Doc in Neurosurgery in South Jersey.
She has been an invited lecturer for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons annually since 1996. In addition to these associations, Dr. O'Shea is a member of the the North American Spine Society, Women in Neurosurgery, Medical Society of New Jersey, and the Camden County Medical Society.
Dr. Steven B. Kirshner
Dr. Steven B. Kirshner was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. He completed both his surgical
internship and residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at The Texas Institute for Spinal Disorders in Houston, Tx. Dr. Kirshner has been practicing as a spinal surgeon in Southern NJ since 1989.
Dr. Kirshner was NJ’s first spine surgeon to perform lumbar total disc replacement following its FDA
approval. To date he has performed more motionsparing surgery than any spinal surgeon in NJ. Dr.
Kirshner was also the first to implant a flexible rod system approved by the FDA in 2004. Dr. Kirshner
performs the majority of his surgeries through a minimally invasive technique, returning patients home
and back to work much earlier.
Dr. Kirshner is responsible for organizing The South Jersey Spine Counsel, a group of spinal surgeons
throughout Southern NJ and Southeastern PA. He is well known and highly regarded throughout the area.
Dr. Kirshner teaches and lectures throughout the United States and internationally. In March 2007, he
was invited to Brazil as a keynote speaker to present on Dynesys Flexible Rod and motion sparing technology. In 2007, he taught neurosurgeons at the AANS in Washington, D.C.
Susan J. Beckman, PA-C
Mrs. Beckman has been a Physician's Assistant since 1986. Before joining The Spine Institute of Southern New Jersey, she worked in Philadelphia in private practice for a Neurosurgeon and also at various hospitals in Philadelphia where she assisted at surgery. She received her Bachelor's degree from Penn State University and Physician Assist degree at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Mrs. Beckman is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants.
Susan R. Fitzgerald, PA-C
Susan Fitzgerald graduated from Drexel University with a Master’s Degree in Health Science. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Boston College. Susan has extensive experience in orthopaedics and spine.
Ms Fitzgerald comes to The Spine Institute of Southern NJ from Pennsylvania Hospital’s prominent Orthopaedic practice Booth, Bartolozzi and Balderston. Ms. Fitzgerald is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants.
